Encourage the Growth of Talent

I will be proud if I give my students the power to consider what kind of society they want to be part of, teaches them to use their abilities to create the change they want to see, and gives them the skills to act on their dreams. This is an ambitious mission and so needed in todays and tomorrows society. I will use my time and energy to make a difference. With this post I celebrate my one year anniversary. It’s exactly one year ago that I started trenducation. I’m thankful for all the followers and readers. You motivate me to continue writing. Thank you very much for reading, dialogue and of course sharing. I must admit that statistics can become addictive sometimes. But above all I really feel that I contribute to a bigger movement in flipping the educational system, rethinking learning, education and being part of educational disruptors. I will continue to contribute and hope to connect with others to make a bigger impact together.

empowering people

At heart, my blogposts are about empowering people. Learning, education and curriculum development are areas of interest to write about and at the same time reflects my contribution to empowering people. My inspiration comes from trend watching, enjoying free sports and interacting with people who are learning. I believe that learning is a product of passion and not test taking. Therefore society would have to embrace a more difficult educational model.


facilitators of passion

Schools should become facilitators of passion instead of directors of course material. Their efforts would be unmeasurable by current standards, because individual passion can’t be standardized. The only measurement of any importance would be happiness, achievements, and sense of fulfillment of graduates over time. But, our current educational system ruled out empowerment. Instead of teaching us to create, it’s taught us to copy, memorize, obey and keep score.

learning experience

In my search for more powerful learning grounded in evidence-based theory I came across constructionism. Constructionism is reflected in the learning experience. Within the learning experience learning is an active process, in which people actively construct knowledge and skills from their experience in the world. People don’t get ideas: they make them! People construct new knowledge with effectiveness when they are engaged in constructing personally meaningful products or services. With standardised education and testing growing rapidly in higher education we loose the connection with our youth, professionals and companies. With loosing that connection education no longer contributes to society. Education educates youth and professionals to become succesful in yesterdays society and outdated companies.

design a future proof learning environment

I believe that educators want to create an environment that will foster students’ love of learning. Because the criteria are intangible, it’s difficult to define exactly what they are. But their is a growing need of designing future proof learning environments. That means helping students to build skills useful in a world where jobs are increasingly information and knowledge-based. An important insight is that this is not job-specific: no one knows what the future economy will demand. Instead, the main goal is to develop self-directed learners: students with adaptive expertise.

road to mastery

Educators and coaches can help to set students on the road to mastery — learning how to learn. Learning is the natural process of pursuing one’s personal goals, in which we construct meaning by filtering information and experiences through our unique perceptions, thoughts and feelings. Many people would agree that ‘experience is the best teacher’ but I believe that experience by itself teaches nothing. You need to interpret your experience against a theory. Only then can you understand learning in the context of a system. A theory is a model of reality that can be used to explain, predict, or master a particular phenomenon. It’s provides a framework for experience, so you can understand what happens at the system level.

hybrid and multidisciplinary

A way forward for professional education is to create a powerful learning experience that takes place in real life, is multidisciplinary, future driven and contains deep thinking. Education in empowered leadership and entrepreneurship in a hybrid environment. This kind of education focuses on students’ potential to develop and to achieve happiness. Creating impact in society asks for learning that taps into creativity and empowerment. I help students to get a direction (by real life challenges), creating a setting that will get them there and navigate them through uncertainties that will follow. I want to provide a place where creatives and potential change-makers can develop their knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies they need to fulfill their ideas, values and visions. Together with others I build the framework in which people can become curious, entrepreneurs and empowered leaders. Our learning experience is not designed simply to shape students to fit the future, but to help them create it!

Creativity, the process of experimenting with things, ignites knowledge. Students must learn metaskills: social intelligence, systemic logic, creative thinking, how to make things and how to learn. Future education must replace replication with imagination, reductive thinking with holistic thinking, passive learning with hands-on learning and unhealthy competition with joyful collaboration. Anyone born after the year 2000 will face a much different world than we did, and that will require a different kind of education. Future learning is a dynamic interplay between the aspirations of students, (creative) companies and teachers in a professional hybrid environment. There is a clear and deliberate similarity between our pedagogical strategy and the qualities we want to promote with our participants. The arc of human evolution is really the arc of human talent. For our purposes, we can define talent as an inherited and learned ability to create beautiful things – whether they are tools, objects, experiences, relationships, situations, solutions or ideas. If the outcomes are not beautiful, the maker is demonstrating creativity, but not nescessarily talent. Talent works on a higher level than creativity. It requires higher developed ‘making’ skills. And making skills can only be learned by making things. Therefore ludic learning is the approach. Ludic learning is learning by play. It’s an effective approach because it provides space for positive emotions. Guided by findings in educational research and neuroscience, the emphasis on not only cognitive skills but also social skills, collaboration, play and learning how to learn makes the learning experience much more powerful. What the world needs are people who think for themselves, use their imagination, communicate well and can work in teams, and who can adapt to continuous change. This is why change is needed. And it starts with people who can make big leaps of imagination, courage and effort. Are you in?
